There's a quiet kind of courage in sitting across from someone you trust and saying, "I don't know where to start." Marcia Atkinson has been that trusted person for women across Cobourg and the surrounding region for more than a decade - and her mission has always been the same: to help women who had very little financial knowledge find their footing, their confidence, and their future.

As an Insurance Advisor and Investment Representative at Atkinson Wealth, Marcia has built her practice on something most financial advisors overlook: empathy. She knows that money decisions are rarely just about money. They're about life, transitions, loss, reinvention, and hope.

I sat down with Marcia to learn more about her journey, what drives her, and the wisdom she's gathered after years of helping women step into financial clarity.

~In Her Own Words~

Q: What inspired you to become a financial advisor?

Marcia's path into finance wasn't about spreadsheets or stock markets; it was deeply personal. She came to understand the real, life-changing value of insurance early on, and that understanding became her compass. When you've seen firsthand how the right financial plan can protect a family or give someone breathing room during a crisis, you don't forget it. That's the kind of purpose that drives a career.

Q: What drives you and your business every day?

"Helping women who had zero knowledge." Those are Marcia's words, and they say everything. Her practice was built for women who may have never had to think about finances on their own, perhaps because a spouse always handled it, or because life simply hadn't required it yet. Suddenly single. Newly widowed. Just sold the family home. These are the women Marcia shows up for, every single day.

Q: What were some of the early challenges you faced?

Like many entrepreneurs, Marcia's biggest early hurdle wasn't finding clients; it was understanding the business itself. Learning the industry from the inside out, building credibility, and navigating a field that hasn't always made women feel welcome took persistence. But she pushed through, and that lived experience now informs how she guides her own clients through unfamiliar territory.

Q: What has been the biggest key to your success?

"Finding and sustaining key clients." It sounds simple, but there's profound depth in that answer. In financial services, trust is everything. Building relationships that last years, sometimes decades, requires consistency, care, and showing up, especially when life gets hard. Marcia's long-standing client relationships aren't just good business. They're a testament to the kind of advisor she is.

Q: Any advice from your business journey you'd like to share?

Marcia is candid: it takes about a decade to truly establish yourself. That's not discouraging, it's liberating. It gives you permission to grow at the pace real, lasting success requires. She's also clear that you don't have to do it alone. Today, she says, she has "a wonderful support system”, something she believes every woman in business deserves to build.

Q: What tools or resources have been most invaluable to you?

Marcia's top five:

✦ Mentors - she credits guidance from others as foundational

✦ Being a woman with empathy - knowing how to communicate value matters

✦ Connections in her community - local roots run deep at Atkinson Wealth

✦ Federal resources - understanding the landscape she works within

✦ A wonderful support system - people who show up for her, too

Q: How do you deal with failure or setbacks?

Two words: keep going. There's no elaborate strategy, no complicated framework. Just resilience. Just showing up again. It's the kind of answer that only comes from someone who has actually been tested and kept moving anyway.

Q: What's the best advice you'd pass along to others?

"Keep striving. Keep sharing what you know with others. Continue to encourage and help."

That, in essence, is who Marcia Atkinson is. Not just an advisor - a community builder, a mentor, a woman who found her purpose in lifting others.
